How to Use BibFind

A guide for researchers working on proposals, dissertations, and research papers.

Purpose

BibFind is designed to help researchers organize and manage bibliographic references for research papers, research proposals, and dissertation proposals. It helps you track citation counts, organize papers by subject and sub-subject libraries, and maintain notes as you read through your research materials.

Step-by-Step Workflow

Step 1: Create Your Subject Library in Google Scholar

Start by using Google Scholar to search for papers related to your research topic. For example, if you're researching "AI LLM Attacks" or "Security and Privacy," you might create a sub-subject library focused on specific attack types like "Prompt Injection Attacks."

Example:

Subject: AI LLM Attacks
Sub-Subject Library: Prompt Injection Attacks

Step 2: Export from Google Scholar as BibTeX

Once you've collected the papers you want in your sub-subject library, export them from Google Scholar as BibTeX format. This will give you a text file containing all the bibliographic information for your papers.

Step 3: Paste BibTeX into BibFind

Copy the BibTeX content from your exported file and paste it into the BibTeX Input text area on the BibFind home page.

Step 4: Name Your Subject/Category

Enter a Subject / Category name in the input field. This should match your sub-subject library name (e.g., "Prompt Injection Attacks"). This helps you organize and filter your papers later.

Step 5: Fetch Citation Counts

Click the "Fetch Citation Counts" button. BibFind will automatically look up each paper in OpenAlex to retrieve current citation counts and metadata. This may take a moment depending on how many papers you've pasted.

Step 6: Save Your Bib Dump

Once the citation counts have been fetched, click "Save Bib Dump" to store your papers in the database. Your papers are now saved and organized by subject/category.

Step 7: Read Papers and Add Notes

As you read through your papers, go to the "View Stored Entries" page (or use the table view). Search for a paper by its title, then click "View/Edit Note" to add your notes, observations, and insights about that paper. This helps you keep track of important findings as you work through your research.
